Background of the Study
Climate change has emerged as a profound environmental challenge, particularly for communities that rely on natural resources for their livelihoods. In Brass, Bayelsa State, rural communities dependent on fishing are increasingly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change (Okon, 2023). Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, and sea-level changes disrupt aquatic ecosystems, leading to reduced fish stocks and altered fishing practices (Ifeanyi, 2024). Such environmental shifts not only threaten food security but also destabilize the economic foundation of fishery-dependent households. Traditional fishing methods are being challenged by these changes, exacerbating socio-economic vulnerabilities and creating a pressing need for adaptive strategies. With limited governmental support and insufficient adaptive infrastructure, these communities struggle to cope with declining fish yields and deteriorating environmental conditions. This study examines the multifaceted impacts of climate change on both the ecological and socio-economic dimensions of fishery-dependent communities in Brass. By integrating scientific data with local observations, the research will offer a comprehensive analysis of how climate variability affects traditional fishing practices and community resilience (Chukwu, 2023; Abiola, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Fishery-dependent communities in Brass are facing escalating challenges due to the rapid progression of climate change. Unpredictable weather patterns and environmental degradation have led to a significant decline in fish populations, directly impacting local livelihoods and food security (Uche, 2023). The inadequacy of adaptive strategies and support systems further exacerbates these challenges, leaving communities with diminished capacity to cope with environmental stress. Traditional fishing practices that once ensured economic stability are now compromised, leading to increased poverty and social instability. This study intends to examine the extent of these challenges and identify effective adaptive measures that can safeguard the socio-economic well-being of fishery-dependent communities (Ekene, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the impact of climate change on fish populations and fishing practices.
To assess the socio-economic effects of climate variability on fishery-dependent communities.
To recommend adaptive strategies for enhancing community resilience.
Research Questions:
How has climate change affected fish populations in Brass?
What are the socio-economic impacts of declining fish stocks on local communities?
Which adaptive measures can mitigate the effects of climate change on fishery-dependent livelihoods?
Research Hypotheses:
Climate change significantly reduces fish populations in Brass.
Economic well-being in fishery-dependent communities is adversely affected by climate variability.
Implementation of adaptive strategies can improve community resilience.
Significance of the Study
This study is crucial in highlighting the intersection of climate change and rural livelihoods in fishery-dependent communities (Adewuyi, 2023). The findings will provide essential insights for policymakers, environmental agencies, and community leaders, guiding the development of adaptive strategies that safeguard both ecological integrity and economic stability. By addressing urgent challenges posed by climate variability, the research contributes to sustainable rural development and enhanced environmental resilience (Olu, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining the impacts of climate change on fishery-dependent communities in Brass. It focuses solely on local environmental changes and their socio-economic repercussions, excluding broader regional analyses.
Definitions of Terms:
Climate Change: Long-term alterations in temperature and weather patterns.
Fishery-Dependent Communities: Populations that rely primarily on fishing for their livelihoods.
Adaptive Strategies: Measures implemented to mitigate adverse effects of environmental changes.
